Our King, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 1973 (Martin Luther King Apartments, Madison St at Kedzie Ave)
Commissioned by the Chicago Housing Authority, Geraldine McCullough’s nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture (pictured, right) is inspired by 15th-century art from what is now Nigeria. The work is rich with symbolism: King’s tiger-tooth necklace signifies courage, the dove on his headdress denotes his commitment to peace and the broken Coptic cross he carries represents his assassination.
