“The Art of Democracy”
Where and when
Loyola University Museum of Art. 820 N Michigan Ave, 312-915-7600, luc.edu/luma. Sept 6–Nov 9.
What it is
Sixty contemporary printmakers call for social justice and freedom of speech. Twenty-five of them, including Shawn Stucky (work at left) and Michael Barnes, are from the Chicago area.
Candidate connections
Obama admittedly doesn’t appear in this show. But the political prints in “The Art of Democracy” will remind everyone that our hometown candidate inspired the best campaign graphics of 2008: Shepard Fairey and Ray Noland’s posters, now on view in the windows of homes throughout Chicago. Besides, which party do you think is responsible for what curators call “the dire state of American politics”—the Whigs?
