“1968: Art and Politics in Chicago”
Where and when
DePaul University Art Museum. 2350 N Kenmore Ave, 773-325-7506, museums.depaul.edu. Sept 18–Nov 23.
What it is
Barnett Newman’s controversial barbed-wire sculpture, Lace Curtain for Mayor Daley—a slam against police brutality that’s splattered with blood-red paint—is one of 40 artworks that respond to the 1968 Democratic National Convention, along with films, photographs and posters.
Candidate connections
Opposition to the Vietnam War fueled the Chicago 1968 protests. Former presidential candidate Ron Paul made ending the Iraq War a crucial part of his platform—and on Tuesday 2, Paul hosts a “Rally for the Republic” in Minneapolis that’s billed as a “counter-rally” to the concurrent Republican National Convention in St. Paul. If there’s a (former) presidential candidate with which this ’68-themed show would be aligned, it’d be Paul. Dude supports legalizing marijuana. Groovy, man.
