In August, Chicagoan Ernest “Brownie” Brown, a Tap Dance Hall of Famer, died at age 93. The fifth annual Chicago Tap Summit is dedicated to him—and looks to the legacy of living legends as well. Organized by Bril Barrett’s nonprofit M.A.D.D. Rhythms, the Summit offers performances, workshops and panel discussions featuring Jeni LeGon, a Chicago native who danced in the 1935 film Hooray for Love along with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson; Prince Spencer, whose Four Step Brothers group performed alongside Frank Sinatra; Harold Cromer, “Stumpy” of the dance duo Stump and Stumpy; and Robert L. Reed, founder-organizer of the St. Louis and Oklahoma City Tap Festivals.
