WINNER - Sweets & Savories
The king of haute burgers still holds court, with its hefty Kobe beef patty topped with a slab of foie gras pâté (the loophole to the ban is that the foie is served as a topping, and not a dish) and a generous slathering of truffle mayonnaise. In fact, it may even be better than it ever was: Now that foie has become contraband, eating this burger has an element of excitement that we haven’t experienced since…well, since we ate it the first time. $17. 1534 W Fullerton Pkwy, 773-281-6778
#2 - Hot Chocolate
This hand-formed burger is layered with thick Plapp Farm bacon and Carr Valley six-year cheddar on a toasted, house-made, garlic oil–brushed bun. House-made dill pickles complete the delicious package. $12.1747 N Damen Ave, 773-489-1747
#3 - Rockit
The irony of this burger—topped with caramelized shallots, fig paste and melted Brie—is that it’s usually the classiest thing in this place. $19.22 W Hubbard St, 312-645-6000
#4 - Yoshi’s Café
With advocates like veteran chef Yoshi Katsumura (his most current incarnation combines a juicy Wagyu beef patty with mizuna Asian greens, Brie, house-made brioche and mango ketchup), we don’t know how burgers got their humdrum reputation. $17.95. 3257 N Halsted St, 773-248-6160
#5 - Goose Island Brew Pub
This black pepper–crusted half-pounder on a toasted pumpernickel bun is topped with Düsseldorf mustard, roasted garlic cloves and Stilton cheese. Around the pub they call it “legendary,” but we’re not sure if they’re talking about the burger or your breath after eating it. $8.95.1800 N Clybourn Ave, 312-915-0071
Have you tried farmerie 58? They have two burgers, one with smoked cheddar, apple wood smoked duroc bacon, dijon aioli, and celeriac remoulade. The other has andouille, manchego, truffle aioli, and a fried egg. I think there may be a new leader!!!
The Hot Chocolate burger is even better with the optional fried egg.
I'm surprised Hamburger Marys didn't make the list. It may be a kitschy chain, but it's still at the top of my list.
