Leyly Gomez, 13
Bowl of vanilla with fudge and caramel on the side
Location Margie’s Candies (1960 N Western Ave, 773-384-1035)
Method of consumption Nibble
Schleser’s analysis “Leyly is high maintenance, very particular. She doesn’t have an ice-cream cone or a plain bowl of vanilla. She’s got the fancy bowl and the sauces going on.”
Gomez says “I get vanilla because it’s a natural flavor. They also serve it with wafers, and the caramel and chocolate come in a saucer, which I like. The ice cream is sort of an excuse to eat the caramel.”
Froy Mena, 31
Large rainbow (chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House [vanilla with cherries and walnuts], pistachio and orange sherbet) on a sugar cone
Location Original Rainbow Cone (9233 S Western Ave, 773-238-7075)
Method of consumption Lick
Schleser’s analysis “He looks like a tough guy, but he’s eating rainbow ice cream. His order and method makes me think he’s not. The attitude is probably just a function of his job. I’m betting he’s not married at this point.”
Mena says “I’m married with a baby and I am a Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy…. The rainbow cone is all about nostalgia. I bring my kid because my family used to come here when I was a kid.”
Fethiya Idris, 21
Vanilla and chocolate Dip Cup
Location Dairy Queen (3811 N Southport Ave, 773-857-7004)
Method of consumption Bite
Schleser’s analysis “Fethiya’s order is down to earth. She’s at a Dairy Queen. She’s no frills. Her concerns and interests are more noble than cachet.”
Idris says “I go to Roosevelt [University] and study sociology. I like studying racial and ethnic issues…. I’m also really into fashion and beauty…. Dairy Queen is the best. Cold Stone [Creamery] is too expensive.”
Wade Challacombe, 31
Single scoop mocha chip on a regular cone
Location Sweet Occasions (4639 N Damen Ave, 773-293-3080)
Method of consumption Bite
Schleser’s analysis “Sounds like a Starbucks order. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him at a Starbucks ordering a single-shot latte with a bunch of stuff added to it. Probably has a very detail-oriented job. I bet if you asked him about his golf clubs, he could tell you the model number, weight and length. I’m guessing he drives a BMW.”
Challacombe says “I’m a big coffee drinker. During the week, I’m a three-cup-a-day guy. I practice corporate law with Winston & Strawn.”
