Southern flying squirrel
Glaucomys volans
Description Gray with a white tummy; resembles a typical squirrel except for its patagium—a flap of skin running from wrist to ankle that allows it to glide like a soft, furry Frisbee.
Habitat Any area forest preserve—the best place in Cook County is probably Thatcher Woods, just west of the city in River Forest. Also, Morton Arboretum in Lisle. Scope for these critters at night.
Notes Chicago is home to a lot of freakin’ squirrels—eight varieties, to be exact—including the ubiquitous gray and fox squirrels, the beloved chipmunk and that media whore the groundhog. And while Brown says appearances by these real-life Rockys (as in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons) tend to be freakish and random, “some people see them return to their birdfeeders and get an almost nightly show.”
I LOVE POSSUMS!!!!
The nests you are seeing are not in Rosemont, they are off of 90 in Busse Woods near Arlington Heights, and they are mostly Great Blue Herons along with a few other species.
Bats aren't rodents.
This Place is a Zoo -- Big Brown Bat...Did your writer really think that bats are rodents? They are mammals and are closer related to humans genetically than they are to mice. I could see if there was a ha ha in the little write-up after it says flying rodents, but looks like he/she was serious. I think if Larry Heaney, who is quoted in the article, ever sees this he'll be pretty ashamed and upset to be associated with such a misconception.
I have often noticed a rookery of nests close to Rosemount, IL. Does anyone know if these are eagles or a type of heron?
