ZEBRA MUSSEL
Why they’re unwelcome The wee stripey mollusks clog water-intake pipes and outcompete native fauna, slurping down the algae and leaving our local crustaceans hungry.
Sordid history Brought to North America as stowaways on a European ship in 1988, they had colonized the entire Great Lakes by the following year. Yipes.
Can they be stopped? There’s no way to eliminate them once they get a foothold. Shellhold. You know what we mean.
Where are they now? The Great Lakes and adjacent waterways are filthy with ’em, and they’re on the move, having been sighted this year in California and Colorado.
