Why they’re unwelcome These nonnative creepy-crawlies infest and destroy trees.
Sordid history Found for the first time in Chicago in the Ravenswood area in 1998, they’ve since killed trees from O’Hare to Oz Park.
Can they be stopped? Yes, by burning the infested trees.
Where are they now? Hooray, Illinois! We’re the first state to have officially eliminated the horned menace, as of two months ago, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
