Gayl moves on to headhunter No. 2. She also makes some cutbacks: She no longer needs her Metra card to commute downtown, for one thing; she doesn’t drive as much; she hardly ever eats out or shops; she stops purchasing nonessential items like bottled water; and she buys chicken instead of her preferred steak. Each time she visits her retired parents in Arlington Heights, her mom sends her home with bags of food—including steak.
