Exactly four months after being laid off, Gayl has yet to hear about the position. After learning not to rely so heavily on headhunters, she faces a new possibility: moving away from Chicago, which would involve leaving behind most of her family and friends. She decides to visit her sister in Orlando, Florida, to make contacts there. The day before her flight, Gayl, though frustrated, sounds strangely upbeat: “You do what you have to do,” she says. What Gayl may have to do now is go wherever there are job openings—and wait for her iPhone to ring.
