It might take more than a tired rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” to ensure health, wealth and happiness in 2009. To maximize our chances at finding good fortune next year, we’re tapping the New Year’s traditions of a few different cultures, trying our luck with everything from scarlet thongs to a good group laugh.

GERMANY

TRADITION
Molten lead poured in water foretells the future, according to an old Sylvester, or New Year’s, custom. If the lead forms into a ball, luck will roll your way; a bottle means happy times ahead; a ring signifies a wedding.

LOCAL VERSION
Ring in the new year German-style at the DANK-Haus German Cultural Center’s two-floor Sylvesterball party (4740 N Western Ave, 773-561-9181). Witness bleigiessen, or lead pouring, at the upscale second-floor party—a buffet dinner, Champagne toast and live music are all part of the package.
