PUERTO RICO
TRADITION
To drive out evil spirits, it’s customary to throw buckets of water out the window on New Year’s Eve. To bring in good luck, eat 12 grapes at midnight.
LOCAL VERSION
Chicago’s not San Juan, people: Dumping icy water on someone on a frigid winter night could be deadly. Instead, count down the last 12 seconds of 2008 with 12 grapes at Latin Street Dancing’s Family New Year’s Eve Party (540 N LaSalle St, 312-427-2572). Then, salsa the night away.
