KIDS Dirty Sock Funtime Band
This kiddie act puts on a show that’s the kind of over-the-top fun (think troupes of dancers in silly wigs and costumes) that grabs little ones’ attention and, thanks to catchy rock tunes, ropes in the whole family. The nine-piece band—which plays an 11am show at Ravinia (418 Sheridan Rd, Highland Park, 847-266-5100, ravinia.org; $10, lawn $5) June 13—includes musicians from the United States, Germany and Australia, giving the fun a global vibe. —Judy Sutton Taylor
MUSIC Ashley Tisdale, Guilty Pleasure (Warner Bros.)
Best known as a teen queen named after a wrinkled dog, High School Musical’s Sharpay had her nose done, hair dyed and sound sexed up. The title Guilty Pleasure reassures adult listeners it’s publicly acceptable to enjoy. Hell, the first single even wheedles “It’s Alright, It’s OK.” June 16.—Brent DiCrescenzo
FILM Land of the Lost
Dino DNA! Will Ferrell, Danny McBride and Anna Friel get down with prehistoric chimps in this considerably less-cheap-looking upgrade of the classic ’70s kids show. This reboot promises more comedy, more action and better special effects. Let’s just hope it’s better than Lost in Space. June 5.—Ben Kenigsberg
BOOKS The Strain by Guillermo del Toro
The Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy director kicks off his series of vampire novels June 2. In the first salvo, written with Chuck Hogan, the fanged fiends are infected by a vampiric virus that an epidemiologist must stop. This pulpy fun might be less of a beach read than a good one to devour by candlelight when a summer thunderstorm knocks out the power. —Jonathan Messinger
