LIVING ON THE LEDGE You better watch your step at Sonotheque.

When it comes to discerning DJ culture in Chicago, few nightspots represent better than Sonotheque (1444 W Chicago Ave, 312-226-7600). Its early adoption of a world-class sound system set off a trend in the city, with clubs from Wrigleyville to River North jumping on the bandwagon to beef up their sound. We’d be head over heels if even the most agile dancers weren’t literally head over heels: Due to an unfortunate step that runs the entire length of the dance floor, you run the risk of stumbling when busting a move. “Sonotheque was originally conceived of as a listening lounge,” explains musical curator Joe Bryl. With loungey dance music waning in popularity, Sonotheque has readapted its musical programming to follow trends. “The design wasn’t meant for dancing,” admits Bryl, who has no plans to remodel the space. “But, through its own Darwinist sort of transformation, the club has evolved. Or devolved, depending on how you look at it.”
In the meantime Try Smart Bar (3730 N Clark St, 773-549-0203). It has the same great lineups, the same great sound system and ample room for dancing.
