For one heavenly week every September and April, more than a dozen Chicago spas offer luxe treatments, like massages and facials, for a penny-pincher’s dream price of $50. One problem: It’s crazy-tough to snag an appointment. Couldn’t spas be required to offer a minimum number of appointments? Nope, says Spa Week Media’s Lindsey Gockenbach. Because the venues differ so drastically—from large hotel spas to small boutique salons—it’s impossible to mandate a baseline. “We encourage spas to take as many appointments as they can—even if that means extending the deal another week,” Gockenbach says. What about increasing the number of participating spas, so there are more appointments to go around? Gockenbach explains that for some spas, the economics don’t make sense—because they have to pay to participate (in exchange for national and local marketing). A word to the wise: Savvy spa-ers can try calling today to score an April spot in the twice-yearly extravaganza, before the Spa Week site launches.
