In their 1977 interviews, David Frost (Sheen) and Richard Nixon (Langella) shared a thirst for media vitality—that’s the theme of Peter Morgan’s play and this terrific, wonky film version that improves upon it. Who the ultimate victor was says more about our modern appetites than anyone knew, though Frost/Nixon’s belated awakening of a guilty conscience feels a touch too late in today’s hopeful atmosphere. (It’s the best film of 2006.) Still, to luxuriate in Langella’s magnificent performance is to appreciate how movies can ennoble even the worst of us. Extras include comparison clips from the actual interview; there’s also a strange visit to the Richard Nixon Library.
