Back in the 1990s, an anime series called Neon Genesis Evangelion ran on Japanese television to great acclaim. This film combines old footage from the first six episodes with some new material as part of a proposed trilogy designed to extract a few more yen from anime buffs. For all but series fanatics, it will feel cryptic, elliptical and rushed. Shy teenager Shinji Ikari finds himself recruited to pilot a giant robot as part of the last line of defense against the mysterious alien machines that obligingly attack fortress Tokyo one at a time. After 98 minutes of honkin’ big explosions, teenage self-doubting and a bit of tasteful nudity, we’re thrown one of those “To be continued” promises. Continue without us.

I'm really suprised by this review, the new evangelion films are stunning pieces of animation both from a technical and directorial perspective. 1.0 is in fact a reworking of the first few acts of the story with no 'recycled footage' as incorrectly mentioned here. It's a shame that reviewers in the west can't see beyond their cultural prejudices and give credit where its due. I suspect that this critic hasn't even bothered to view the original series and got most of his intl from wikipedia.
