One of the marks of a really good documentary is that it evokes complicated emotional responses. This doc recounting the involvement of the Service Employees International Union in the election of Barack Obama is, alas, all uplift. The union’s aggressive campaigning, with members going door to door for Obama, is shown as an unquestionable and unquestioned good. The best moments come in interviews with union members who have taken time away from their families for the campaign because they believe that Obama really can bring change. It’s nice to share their feeling for a while, but Silber would serve us better with a bit more critical distance.
