After 81 seasons, Kiddieland Amusement Park in west suburban Melrose Park will be closing for good at the end of September. This slide show captures the park in action--from the iconic 1939 Roto Whip to the two trains that chug around the grounds--on June 14, 2009, an idyllic day to be a kid (no matter your age) at Kiddieland. It is so sad that Kiddieland has closed. My parents took me there for the first time over 53 years ago. I had the honor of being at the closing ceremony on October 4 and riding on my childhood favorite Steam Train for its final ride. I'm just glad that I grew up when I did and could experience places like Kiddieland. Places that foster and celebrate the innocence of childhood have been replaced by violent video games and impersonal technology. Thanks, Kiddieland, for the fun and memories!
This is what happens when greedy people are involved. They simply want the millions offered by developers for the land, so they could care less about memories, landmark status, profits, etc.
This was a magical place for me as a child, especially at night.- all the colored lights, the tractors, the train the helicopters and my grandpaents. I took my kids there too. i was going to take my grand kids (they're not here yet). how horribly sad that Kiddieland wont be there for them too. it seems that greed always wins. if i had the money , I'd buy it back and give it to the kids , present and future. i really would.
my husband and i went to kiddieland when we were kids. sunday august 23 we took our 2 boys there for the last time. we took photos and video and were sad when we left. another kids chicago icon is going away and now there is nothing left to take our kids to that is just for them. it sickens me that a place like this is less important than the profits that the land it sits on is more valuable to a community than a wholesome safe place for our kids to play
What a shame! I went here when I was young, it was my 1st job (what a fun summer), and I took my kids here when they were small. It is packed with memories.
I have pictures of myself on so many of these rides! I got chills looking at these pics/ Thanks!
Pictures took me by surprise. I have some very vivid early memories from the '60s of getting on those rides and being totally excited about it. Its great it lasted so long and made so many kids happy!
This was the first amusment park I took my kids to. I was actually the 1st roller coaster they road. It is soo sad to see it close. There will never be another like it.
We just moved to the area and started taking our 1 and 2 year old to Kiddieland this summer. We all love it so much - there is really no place that compares when you have very young children. What a wonderful opportunity to be in a magical place built just for them. We are going to be so sad to say good bye - truly heartbroken.
i hate oaks park
There are pictures of my little brother and I flying on the Dumbo ride from about 18 years ago. Some of these pictures brought back fun memories! I definitely remember riding in those car-like things that kind of look like Jeeps. My two brothers and I LOVED Kiddieland. It always seemed like it was so far away from our suburb; like it was in another state. Then I just drove past it a few months ago and didn't realize how close it was, and how small it was.
