What’s your dog’s name?
His name is Bodie. It comes from a character in the show The Wire.
I initially thought you might be a dog walker, since you’re walking him in the middle of the workday.
Well, I’m unemployed, and I’m actually headed to a job interview later today. I’m going down to Anthropologie. I just got my master’s in design a couple months ago from the School of the Art Institute. The program was called Designed Objects, basically industrial design, which could be designing anything from a mailbox to a coffee cup.
With all that education, why apply at Anthropologie?
Well, I thought the degree might help out, but it has put me in a pretty bad place, actually. I’ve been overqualified for pretty much every job I’ve applied for. Also, the jobs I’ve been applying for haven’t necessarily been my dream jobs, so they think I might leave in a short period of time. It’s hard to get an in-between job.
What’s your dream position? Who knows, someone might see the interview and hire you. ,
It’s true! But honestly, my dream job is to work for myself.
Has your unemployment been funemployment?
It’s been kind of a roller coaster. Right now, I’m more nervous about it, I gotta say, because a lot of jobs I thought I could get, I haven’t. Every day, I’m replying to posts on various job sites and working on my portfolio. It’s not like I’m sitting on my butt collecting unemployment benefits. Luckily, my parents have helped me out, and I live with my boyfriend, who has a good job.
Does he ever get home from a long day and make you feel guilty?
Not at all, actually. He knows I’m really working my ass off.
If all else fails, maybe you could be a dog walker.
Yeah, I’ve thought about it.
Yo, interviewer, why the flippant tone? With near 11% unemployment, and that's not counting those working their asses off at three or four side jobs, how much longer can TOC afford the luxury of an interviewer AND a photographer to pick people's brains and surmise what they could be up to on a "workday?" I've read TO for four years, never once paid for it, always seem to get it free, and now there's a 95% savings $8/yr offer. Hmm,,, JM, somebody might be suggesting dogwalking for you too soon.
