It’s the same argument every time: Who gets the choice role of Egon in the “Don’t cross the streams” scene of Ghostbusters. For twentysomethings Andrew Weinrich, Paul Karpenko and Brian Peterson, such is the peril in being Chicago Movieoke regulars. Movieoke performers pick a scene from a catalog of more than 200—including quotable faves It’s a Wonderful Life, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Big Lebowski—and recite subtitled dialogue as a muted DVD plays in the background. When we ask regular Trey Johnson (pictured), 29, what pleasure he gets from play-acting Army of Darkness clips, he sniffs. “Dude, look at my fucking shirt! I’m wearing an Evil Dead shirt. It’s a movie-appreciation thing.” Perform for reel at the Whistler (2421 N Milwaukee Ave, 773-227-3530) December 7 and the Bucktown Pub (1658 W Cortland St, 773-394-9898) December 9.
What a Scream! I made my Movie-oke debut at the Bucktown Pub last Wednesday and now I'm hooked. Props to the cute host and $1 shot specials for helping me overcome my stage fright. I'll definitely be coming back to do the From Here to Eternity beach kissing scene.
So much fun! Check it out at the Bucktown Pub for the best crowd. Seems kind of ridiculous, but really, there isn't much more satisfying then acting out some of those Aladdin scenes. They take requests for movies too.
YES! Movieoke is finally getting the attention it deserves~ it is hilarious to watch and so fun. I've done it at the Bucktown Pub a few times and am shocked that it's not more packed. Fools are missing out! There are way more movies to choose from than those mentioned here, and the host brings costumes. Nothing not to love. Keep it going!!
I have done Movieoke a few tmes now at the Bucktown Pub! Only after being cajoled into it, did I realize how much fun it was and started to look for more scenes to perform. I definately plan on retunring to the next one with friends in tow!
My girlfriend and I did this for the first time this past Wednesday (11/11) at the Bucktown Pub! I guess they have it on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. I can't believe more people aren't into this- Holy Crow! So much fun, I'll be back in Dec. to do it again. There's nothing like it and it's the perfect bar amusement for cinephiles and boozers alike!
