We’ve heard of people green-ifying their homes, but it’s pretty rare to find restaurateurs willing to put their money where their ethics are. When Helen and Michael Cameron discussed opening a sibling of their popular Lakeview coffee shop/bar/restaurant/performance space Uncommon Ground, they knew they wanted to go all-out with their eco-friendly ideas. So, at the new Uncommon Ground, tables are made of wood from fallen trees in Jackson Park, solar thermal panels heat all of the water, and a rooftop teaching garden will grow herbs, vegetables and lettuces while hosting local kids learning about food sources. The rest will be familiar to fans of the original Uncommon Ground: live music, local art, organic cocktails and contemporary American food from chef Brian Millman, including pistachio-crusted tilapia (pictured, front) and chorizo-stuffed chicken breast encrusted with cumin and coriander (pictured, back). 1401 W Devon Ave at Glenwood Ave (773-465-9801).
