SPORTING WOOD Despite the various bars, bakeries and restaurants that have opened in West Town, residents Chris and Susan Ongkiko (owners of Continental) and Amy Teri (darkroom) still felt something was missing. And that thing is, essentially, their new bar, Old Oak Tap. More specifically, it’s Old Oak’s enormous patio, which the partners hope will entice people to hang out for what remains of this summer—and convince them to keep hanging out (albeit in the ski-lodgelike indoors) in the winter. Just in case the patio doesn’t make the place irresistible, they’ve hired chef John Manion (formerly of Mas) to create an enticing menu of upscale bar food (such as a spicy tilapia sandwich with Cajun rémoulade). And in case that doesn’t do it, a list of 40 beers, most of them microbrews, should be the clincher. 2109 W Chicago Ave at Hoyne Ave, 773-772-0406.
I went here because it is close to my place in Humboldt. I loved Mas, and I thought the food here was great also. Tons of salads to choose from, and while the server was REALLY not pleased that I wanted spinach instead of romaine and a different dressing, the kitchen had no problem and the food was perfect. Worst thing is definitely the wait service: slow, unfriendly, had food but no utensils. Hopefully it's just growing pains, but a new restaurant can't afford to make a bad 1st impression.
