CUBA LIBRE Even post-Fidel, Cuba might be forbidden country, but chef-owners Alberto and Christine Gonzalez hope that after stepping into 90 Miles Cuban Café, the island won’t feel so far out of reach. In order to get “the rustic feel of Cuba” that he remembers from his childhood, Alberto hauled 100-year-old wood from a barn in Wisconsin and plastered the walls with his collection of pre-Castro newspapers. But the food is where things really get personal. On a recent vacation to Spain, the couple fell in love with “the intimate feel” of the tapas restaurants they wandered into, and they wanted to create a neighborhood place of their own. It doesn’t require a trip across any ocean to guess that their signatures—like pulled-pork-and-plantain and “Cuban style”–tofu sandwiches—will be a welcome addition to restaurant-barren Hamlin Park. 3101 N Clybourn at Barry Ave (773-248-2822).
This place is the best cafe on the north side. I love the cafe con leche and the guava and cheese empanadas the best. Yum Yum Yum. http://mikerodbard.blogspot.com/2009/03/90-miles-munch.html
OUTSTANDING!! I met both owners on my first visit and I was absolutely charmed by their hospitality. The rustic feel of this quaint corner cafe was indeed overwhelming. Needless to say the food was incredible. I ordered the lechon sandwich and I was exteremely pleased with an explosion of flavor in every bite. The empanadas are great too!! I work nearby but live in the western suburbs and I plan to drive into the city just so my family can enjoy this delightful experience first hand! Well done!
stopped by for a chicken dinner and it was great. service and surroundings everything and more was so unexpected. service was wonderful and the owners couldn't be more helpful in my indecision. i'm going back for more of the sandwiches and I've got a group in our office who are going to make a big order for our luncheon group. Of course, i tried the cafe con leche for the first time and now I'm addicted.....so glad this place opened.....
The place is fabulous, they have a history of cuba all over the walls. The service and owners are great, very charming. The food is delicious. Not to mention the owners and I have the same last name. I work in the area so I will make sure my co-workers check the place out.
We stopped in to see what the 'new place' was all about. It was fantastic! The owner's friendly personality and charm added to the already great food. The sandwiches are good, the empanadas (both veggie and beef) are great! The restaurant itself is decorated with authentic cuban ads, newspapers, and even family photos from the owners. We'll be back!
In our first visit we almost didn't make it on time to order our dinner, but thanks to the friendly and forgiving owners, that let us in even a couple of minutes after closing time, we were able to enjoy a delicious Cuban dinner. The decoration of the place is very entertaining (old newspaper clips), which can save a boring blind date. Great black beans, ropa vieja, pastelitos, Cuban coffee. We look forward to our next visit.
We've been waiting for this restaurant to open and it didn't dissapoint us. The ropa vieja has a taste of "home" and the empanadas are delicious. Everything is reasonably priced. We're so lucky we live across the street!
Awesome decor, signature sandwiches... Getting a chance to check this place out first hand, can't wait till it opens!!! Owners Al & Christine are passionate about giving you a unique, Cuban experience!!! Don't want to miss this...
Wow, I am so excited to know we are going to have cuban sandwiches in our neighborhood it was long overdue, I cant wait to taste your cuban sandwiches.
