Haystack
2934 N Broadway (773-549-1225)
When this Lakeview shop opened last summer, the majority of its stock came from a set of seventysomething twins looking to unload their massive collection of clothes and antiques. Since then, owners Phil Tadros, John Mokate and Erin Liston have rented a warehouse on the South Side, from which they update Haystack’s ever-changing inventory. Another major source of the covetable items they sell is the shoppers who bring clothing in on consignment or for on-the-spot cash. In addition to vintage cowboy boots, chairs, desks and dressers ($30–$100), the store stocks new items such as graphic tees by Isotope (two for $25), crocheted jewelry by Kate Pryor ($10) and retro-inspired underwear by Under the Root ($20).
Come here for: The excellent organization of merch and the smart displays. Local artist Brian Heisler is responsible for the shop’s clever paper murals, hanging bird cages and use of frames to display items.
