All About Dance
2214 N Clark St (773-572-8701)
This Lincoln Park studio (pictured above) has an array of adult classes ranging from ballroom to MTV hip-hop (in case you want your first dance to be less Fred Astaire, more Usher). The studio’s fall session is already under way, but if you just want a quick lesson, it offers more than 20 drop-in classes each week for $18 per class. You can even R.S.V.P. for the single classes on the studio’s website.
Arthur Murray Dance Studio
116 W Illinois St (312-644-7554)
There are a handful of wedding-dance packages to choose from at this downtown dance school, depending on how far ahead you are planning your dance. The studio advises couples to come in for a quick 30-minute lesson to learn basics for a few dances and then figure out a class schedule. That first class is $25, but you can print out a free voucher on the Arthur Murray website.
Chicago Dance
3660 W Irving Park Rd (773-267-3411); 415 W Huron St (312-337-9503)
Soon-to-be-newlyweds have three packages to choose from at the dance studio: “the Ruby” ($649) includes ten private lessons, one group course and choreography of the first dance; “the Sapphire” ($999) ups the ante with 15 private lessons; and “the Diamond” ($1,599) includes 25 private lessons, with unlimited practice time at the studio. Couples can sign up for classes anytime.
Dance Center Chicago
3868 N Lincoln Ave (773-880-5044)
This North Center studio offers a beginning-level ballroom-dance class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8–9pm. The drop-in class ($12) teaches one dance per night (either the fox-trot, waltz or slow dance), and its schedule is posted online. For procrastinating newlyweds, the studio also offers private lessons where instructors will help choreograph a dance to a song of the couple’s choosing. The 55-minute lesson is $65 but is open to up to four people, so bring another couple.
Galaxie
2603 W Barry St (773-267-6010)
It’s a little hard to find at first, but located inside a nondescript-looking Logan Square warehouse is a studio that offers classes in swing dancing, Lindy Hop and more. The next six-week swing class for beginners starts on October 28 and costs $90.
