Chuck | Eli Stone | Pushing Daisies
After this story went to press, ABC broke Margaret's heart into a billion weeping pieces canceled both Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies. Sleep with one eye open, Zach Braff--the death of whimsy is nigh. Read more about the cancellation of both shows on the TOC blog.
PUSHING DAISIES
THE DUDE
Ned (Lee Pace) , our sensitive hero who can bring the deceased back to life with a mere touch. (The second touch brings them back to dead, though.) In addition to baking pies, he solves cockamamy crimes by reanimating murder victims and asking who killed them.
ADD ONE PART FANTASY TO…
...one more part fantasy. From Jim Dale’s narration to the Tim Burton–style aesthetic, Daisies is a contemporary fairy tale.
THE BLOND
Olive Snook (Kristin Chenoweth, never better), who works at the Pie Hole, where she pines after a not-interested Ned. She used to be a jockey, started the season confined to a convent, stashes booze under her mattress and occasionally sings.
THE BRUNETTE
Chuck (Anna Friel), Ned’s childhood sweetheart, his one and only and the literal girl next door. He brought her back from the dead, so they can never touch again lest she return to the other side, but she and Ned are together, thus bringing latex play to network television.
THE NOTABLE GUEST STARS
Does David Arquette count as notable? Er, Fred Willard? PD could use a little work in the marquee-guest casting department.
BUT ALL THE BEST LINES GO TO…
Emerson Cod (Chi McBride), the private investigator Ned pairs with to solve crimes (and collect rewards). He’s a knitting aficionado, a DIY pop-up book designer and one of the funniest characters on television.
CHANCES OF SURVIVAL
This is an unjust universe, kids: Daisies basically repels viewers. We’ll be shocked if the show doesn’t get canned after next week. Delighted, but shocked. 10/90.
Catch Chuck (Mondays at 7pm on NBC), Eli Stone (Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC) and Pushing Daisies (Wednesdays at 7pm on ABC) while you can.
