“Italics: Italian Art Between Tradition and Revolution 1968–2008.”
Description
Former MCA curator Francesco Bonami stepped on some toes in deviating from the canon in this survey. But you wouldn't know it from the rich, exciting combination of works on display, created by more than 75 artists including Lucio Fontana, Maurizio Cattelan and Francesco Vezzoli. Works from the well-known Arte Povera and Transavanguardia movements appear alongside less familiar videos, immersive environments and superlative photographs. Unfortunately, such a freewheeling arrangement prevents us from grasping how these artists and movements relate to each other. “Italics” would benefit from more historical context, but it's still a feast for the senses without it.
