The Great God Pan
Description
Influential 19th-century writer Arthur Machen makes a fitting debut for a company devoted to the horror genre. But Charley Sherman's new play is more accurately described as inspired by Machen's work than adapted from it; he's taken a number of liberties with the story, liberally expanding upon the author's themes. Sherman retains Machen's suspenseful, nonlinear storytelling, making his play a bit like a sliding-tile puzzle; we hesitate to give too much away. The production benefits from strong, nuanced character work from the ensemble and an unapologetically low-budget, high-gore mindset.—KV
