Description
Pairing Daniel MacIvor's one-act “Never Swim Alone” (about how awful men can be) and Wendy MacLeod's “The Shallow End” (about how awful teenage girls can be), Theatre Seven's double bill features all the Type-A personalities found in down-market Mars-Venus variations. And yet it impressively sidesteps romcom for the more dangerous water of gender intramurals. In MacIvor's sleekly violent play, directed with head-turning precision by Margot Bordelon, two suit-wearing players (excellent Brian Stojak and Brian Golden) recount directly to the audience their “friendship” since childhood. Meanwhile, MacLeod's play, about the summer poolside backbiting of pubescent girls, features irreplaceable real teens.—CP
