Umbrella Music Festival: “European Jazz Meets Chicago”

See Top live shows. The Umbrella Fest gets into full swing with this cross-continental summit, presenting six free sets throughout the evening. It all starts at 6pm with Lithuanian reedist Liudas Mockunas, supported by Hotti Biscotti regulars pianist Jim Baker, bassist Brian Sandstrom and drummer Steve Hunt. A solo set on percussion and electronics follows from Austria's Martin Brandlmayr at 6:45. At 7:30, Swedish guitar whiz David Stackenäs joins up with bass clarinetist Jason Stein and bassist Josh Abrams. Dutch-German jazzers Frank Gratkowski (reeds), Achim Kaufmann (piano) and Wilbert de Joode (bass) show off their unique chemistry at 8:15, and Swiss reedist Hans Koch joins locals Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello), Brian Labycz (electronics) and Marc Riordan (drums) at 9. Closing out today's program at 10 is a Dutch trio led by Guus Janssen, including brother Wim on drums and bassist Dieter Manderscheid.
