Description
It's a bad sign when you can reduce contemporary Shanghai video to a formula: Illustrate the city's explosive growth with a shot of the 1,535-foot Oriental Pearl TV Tower, jump cuts and Chinese pop. The installation of “Shanghype!” exacerbates its sameness. (Seeing all the videos, which are played one after another, takes more than two and a half hours.) Fortunately, there's enough originality on view to give even impatient viewers genuine insight into what it's like to live—and drive—in a city of almost 19 million people. Through Dec 13.—LWWhen
