“Robert Motherwell: An Attitude Toward Reality.”
Description
Motherwell's (1915–91) intellectual approach to Abstract Expressionism distinguishes his work from his famous New York School peers' in this admirable survey organized by Minneapolis's Walker Art Center. More than 40 drawings, collages, prints and paintings illustrate the artist's evolution from Surrealism to Pop Art, including striking pieces from his Africa Suite and Elegies to the Spanish Republic series. Our only (small) problem with the show is that it's a little too crowded for the meditative experience Motherwell's work encourages. Through Dec 6.—Candice Weber
