“Learning Modern.”
Description
As the Bauhaus celebrates its 90th anniversary, its former faculty members Mies van der Rohe and László Moholy-Nagy cast long shadows over Chicago, where they moved to teach at IIT and the Institute of Design (now part of IIT). The late modernists appear to be the guiding spirits of this fun, sprawling exhibition, which is largely a showcase for the students, faculty and alumni of IIT and SAIC. Given Mies's influence, it's surprising that the best projects tend not to address architecture: Ken Isaacs's 1962 Knowledge Box represents a milestone of educational theory, and Gillion Carrara and Caroline Bellios's homage to American designer Claire McCardell proves fashion could also fulfill the modernist dream.
