“Heartland.”
Description
Curators from the Smart and the Netherlands's Van Abbemuseum had a blast road-tripping across the Midwest to assemble this survey of the region's contemporary art. Unfortunately, their show's Chicago installation is too small to elicit the excitement merited by the quality and range of work produced in “family values” country. We enjoyed the site-specific installations, photos, videos and other projects that made it into the exhibition—many of which portray the heartland as a place where locally oriented, collective initiatives can flourish. But the freshness of the art emerging from Detroit and Kansas City makes the failure to explore other cities included in the “Heartland” catalog deeply frustrating. Through Jan 17.—LW
