Richard III
Description
Two major issues hamper Chicago Shakespeare's production of the Bard's rich, if scattered, early history play. The first is a welter of questionable design choices: a heavy metal score and fog effects threaten to turn the staging into Richard on Ice. Second, while Wallace Acton's Richard is spirited throughout, his performance, for all its physical flair and sadistic glee, never quite settles into a full-fledged take on the hunchbacked king; it's more a collection of mannerisms, at its most stylized edging into Black Adder territory.—JB

A decent lead and an inspired coronation scene, but not much else to enjoy in this awkward production, marred by poor acting in minor roles, annoying overstaging and frequent inaudibility. Rent one of the numerous DVD versions instead.
