They don't come more hyperkinetic, hyperactive or hypodermic than locals Mannequin Men. It's garage rock shot through the grease of early punk that barely allows the listener to shout for mercy. Tonight's a release gig for its new album, Lose Your Illusion, Too. The excellent Huntsville, Alabama, quartet Thomas Function openly flirts with an array of genres—garage, country, old rock & roll—but the driving force seems to be vintage '70s punk from both sides of the Atlantic. While the band's influences—Television, the Buzzcocks—are uniformly thin and guitar-centered, Thomas Function places a menacing keyboard drone behind its every yelp—a sly gothic touch, burbling up from Alabama.
