Ska is not dead, of course, but it did hit a sort of dead end in the '80s with its third-wave ska-punk practitioners. The annual Ska Is Dead tour ropes together several acts of that third-wave vintage, each indebted to Jamaica's best but each nonetheless interpreting the music through a broad lens. Mustard Plug, the Toasters, Deal's Gone Bad, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Green Room Rockers are all crowd-pleasers in their own right, but they, like most ska bands of the past 20 years, have had poor luck finding much new to do with a sound that thrives on simplicity.
