In a world of plastic-meat sub chains, this North Side spot stands out, beloved by generations of Northwestern and Loyola students. The sandwiches on toasted bread with the vinegary "special sauce" are, if not wildly creative, hearty and filling across the board (though beware that the meatball sub, perversely, uses a sweet barbecue sauce rather than marinara). And Mrs. Nemo (there was a Mrs. Nemo?) turns out similarly filling made-from-scratch soups—a bowl of her split pea or minestrone is just the thing on a Chicago winter's day.
