Pupuseria el Salvador
Prices
Average main course: $4.
Description
Tucked in a South Side basement enclave is this tiny pupuseria, widely known for made-to-order pupusas (hand-pounded corn-meal pancakes stuffed with pork, zucchini, or cheese and frijoles). The three-table room is often full, but grab a stool at the little bar for a bird's-eye view of the lovely bandana-clad chicas in the open kitchen grilling up thick chubs of Salvadorian sausage and stirring pots brimming with sweet tamales. The wait is forever, but with simple sides like fried plantains, vinegary slaw and fried chunks of chicharrones (pork cracklings) to satiate, who's looking at the clock?
Hours
Lunch, dinner (closed Tue).
This is one of my favorite spots. The food is delicious and made to order, the reason for the long wait. It is extremely cheap with a drink we probably pay about $8 each. The cheese pupusas are my favorite. The place is very small, but we've never had to wait for a table. they do have take out. I always recommend this place to all my aquaintances.
