Mexx Kitchen at the Whiskey

Though this Nuevo Mexican spot shares the same owners and address as Gold Coast hot spot the Whiskey, the vibe in this tiny dining room is anything but sceny. In fact, under the dim lights, it's the food that creates the most fuss. The guacamole is uncommonly creamy, the shrimp in the tacos are plump and toothsome; coriander-and-chile–crusted tuna is paired with a spicy, sweet and acidic hibiscus–blood orange and habañero emulsion, and carnitas sport an impressively crispy crust. The location does come in handy, though—skip the lackluster pomegranate margaritas and belly up to the Whiskey for an after-dinner drink instead.
