Description
You're interested in trying Puerto Rican food, but you don't know your pastel from your pescado? Use this casual little stalwart as your entry point. You may have already tried its tamales and plantains at Taste of Chicago (where it's the sole Puerto Rican representation each year), but dive deeper into the cuisine with a mofongo (a pork-filled plantain fritter) to start, a jibarito (steak sandwich made with crispy plantains for bread) for a warm-up, and get to the main event with the sautéed steak with onions and a side of pork-flecked beans and rice known as arroz con gandules. Helpful photos of dishes line one wall (the soups taste better than they look) and the English-speaking counter staff is good with guidance.
