So there's Prince, Madonna and now, Hemmi. He's no rock star, but his restaurant sure as hell looks like one. The dim, sultry, candlelit dining room features modern, white-on-white tableware and an eccentric, sexed-up Japanese menu. Chef Hemmi (singularly named on the menu) drops sweet clusters of crab atop greens, oranges and avocados for a tasty starter. The pricey nigiri and sashimi deliver, with fresh, clean flavors and meaty cuts. Some experiments work: The smoky, sweet and tender duck nigiri is delicious. But you can skip the spicy tuna sampler—toppings like pine nuts, caviar and avocado may add interest and texture to the tuna but little flavor.
