Jay's on Taylor

Description
It'd be easy to believe that restaurateur Jay Emerich (Jay's Amore) has been serving home-style Italian-American staples on Taylor street for decades—it's harder to understand what exactly his recently opened bar/restaurant could add to the neighborhood. Sausage stewed with lemony artichoke leaves gave a hint that the fare was going to be a cut above Little Italy's average, but a massive hunk of flavorless, watery lasagna killed that aspiration. Better to follow the lead of UIC students and neighborhood folk gravitating toward that known quantity (a.k.a. beer) in the front bar room.

Time Out reviewers must have gone here when they first opened and gotten a freshly made batch of Lasagna before it had set up... Was here over the Labor Day weekend, Saturday and had the Lasagne and it was excellent! Others at the table enjoyed Eggplant Parm, Filet Vesuvio, cooked to their request, and Mussels with marniara. Apps of Calamari & Bruschetta were very tasty. Service was attentive. Place was clean...including VERY clean lavatories. We'll be back. Encourage all to try!
I tried this place even after seeing it in Time out Chicago because I live in the neighborhood. I was not very impressed. We started with the calmari which was actually very good....giving it the two stars. However the service was not the best and the entrees a little bit bland. I think I will try some of the other restaurants on Taylor street.
Have to say I agree with Time out on this one. Mediocre food. The restaurant is dirty!
Hey Time Out, I'm not sure if you were at the same restaurant that I was at. The food I had was fantastic, as was the service. I agree with the user who posted before me and say the marinara sauce is the best I have ever had. I had the meatballs and pizza. The pizza was a true New York style pizza which is hard to find in Chicago, and the meatballs were flawless. I will be ordering delivery from them from now on. I urge all the UIC students to go in and try it out. You won't be disappointed.
Im not sure what the reviewer of this restaurant was talking about when then called the Lasagna flavorless, they must be used to over salted tv dinners. The food and service were excellent!! The red sause was some of the best I have ever had. We had the Lasagna and Eggplant parmesan and it was fantastic. I would definitely go back!!
