Utopia International Caribbean Cuisine
Prices
Average small plate: $13.
Description
At this small-plates restaurant/lounge/jazz club, food is making a play for the limelight with items from the raw bar, which features a nightly ceviche (a recent shrimp special got both heat and sweetness from a spicy cocktail sauce) and a crab cocktail studded with corn and cilantro. The hot plates are less successful—a lobster spring roll was short on lobster, and gnocchi had the consistency of clay. But head downstairs for some music, and you'll probably forget any missteps.
Hours
Lunch, dinner.
The food is wonderful. They just need more wait staff and faster turn around in the kitchen. Service was super slow so if you are hungry the food is worth it but you will wait at least an hour to be served.
The only place I know in the city that offers caribbean (jerk) that is not a shack and is not in a less desirable area of Chicago. Great food, great service, I would recommend Utopia to the world.
the food was EXCELLENT the prices were affordable for family dining. area Nice and close to my church.
they RUINED my bday. we were seated @ the wrong table[some buffet setup] then waited over 20 mins to get menus & WARM water. we then waited another 30 mins b4 our order was taken. we asked for bread and he said he'd get it.[never did] when out food came it was almost 1.5 hrs later. we didn't leav because our party was larger and we didnt' want to randomly overwhelm another[BETTER] establishment. the food came out randomly, most orders weren't correct, the server was rude. DONT GO!
Our table of 4 was one of four tables we saw walk out on Saturday 9/12/09. I think we were all headed to the U2 concert after dinner. Orders were taken, we were given water and that was it. Nobody even got their drinks. When we walked out after close to 30 min. our friend told the waitress to cancel our order. She just shrugged, doubt our order had even been entered....
The restauarant is very trendy. It is definitely the South loop dinner and late night spot. We had a great time. The restaurant is nice and staff were very helpful and pleasant. We will definitely be back. They have only been open for 11 months and are doing quite well. On Mondays they have a variety show and last Monday the talent was very entertaining. They are getting ready for August to celeberate their first anniversary and a huge Barack Obama fundraiser on August 4th. Try it out!
