Description
You won't need the photographic history on the walls to tell you that this restaurant has been around since the '70s—the decor (including the gold, sparkly and slightly ragged booths) will tip you off right away. The heavily chandeliered dining room and the crowns on the servers' heads make it clear that owner Helen Maybell Anglin takes the title "Soul Queen" seriously. Mac and cheese isn't her strong suit, but once you hit the buffet of sweet corn-bread muffins, aromatic stuffing, tender short ribs, golden fried chicken and bright-orange peach cobbler, you'll happily bow down to the throne.
Hours
Lunch, dinner.
I'm happy to say that the reports of Soul Queen's demise are greatly exaggerated. I was just there today, and the place looks the same as ever. (Except not as many customers as they should have). This was the 1st restaurant I took my wife to when we first met 17 years ago. Much to my surprise, the Soul Queen herself, Helen Anglin was there this afternoon, still charming and full of flattery.
