Description
Contrary to dining trends, the Depot is not a "contemporary take on" or an "upscale version of" a diner; it's simply the real thing. Everything on the menu is simple and excellently seasoned: Golden breakfast potatoes get a sprinkling of paprika, big bowls of chili have enough bite to wake your taste buds up (but not burn them off) and the juicy pieces of turkey on the open-faced sandwich are covered in thick, peppery gravy—so much that you may have trouble finding the bread underneath it all. Housemade desserts tempt from behind the counter; sadly, they look better than they taste, so stick with coffee.
Hours
Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
4 of us ate at the Depot last week. The meat on both the pot roast sandwich and the open face turkey sandwich was dry, and the gravy, while creamy, had very little taste. The cranberry relish was tasty, but way too sweet -- best suited for a pie filling. Also, the red velvet cake was dry with very little flavor -- however, the cream cheese frosting was delicious. The lentil soup and the dounuts were wonderful.
I too have worked with Chef (Robert)Nava for some time in the past. I have not had the opportunity yet to dine at his restaurant but certainly look forward to making the trek. I can say however, you will never meet another man who is more passionate about putting his name on the front door of his establishment as well as the fact that his general knowledge of culinary cannot be matched. I wish him luck and look forward to that cup of coffee.
I've worked with the Chef there for a number of years prior to his opening of The Depot and this guy is the real deal. If you want to experience the simple pleasure of comfort food this is the place for you and everyone like you. You can go there every day of the week and still have money left for the movies. Great Chef and a Great Restaurant.
Gatsby’s Bash Please come support a dear friend of mine, Anna, and her husband Bob. She has always been there for others and she has helped me out when I have been down on my luck, many times over. I am inspired by the opportunity to return the favor. Now more than ever, Bob & Anna need our help. On Friday April 3rd, 2009 from 8 – 12 pm, please come support the Depot American Diner! Please come to KLAS restaurant, looks like a castle, how cool is that? 5734 W. Cermak Rd. Cicero, IL 60804 708-652-0795 $25 suggested donation at the door Paintings, jewelry and other items up for live auction. Klas will also feature one of their Czech beers, sales of which will be donated to The Depot. Their efforts in creating this special place in their community has become a regular for many. Business is booming at the Depot, but unfortunately an investor backed out, leaving them in the red. This is not a major corporation asking for a bailout, they are hard-working good folks who are running a successful business. Those businesses that contribute to the community, deserve community support. The Depot has helped create a sense culture and diversity. The Chicago and Oak Park police are some of the many diverse regulars that frequent this establishment, bringing together many people from different walks of life. This has created a feeling of harmony between the neighboring communities, which has resulted in the upstart of many new businesses. Come join the many festivities: An auction featuring paintings, jewelry, musical instruments, live music by bands and solo artists, great food, great people, and a very worthy cause. A good time will be had by all. Those unable to attend and would like to contribute, please send donation payable to “The Depot” and send to 5840 W Roosevelt Chicago, IL 60644. This place is owned and ran by a very well known (retired) chef. I can honestly say that I have had everything, I mean everything on the menu so many times and I have been spoiled by the taste and pure quality of this awesome food! I took my brother here, who happens to write a food column in upstate New York and he was A-Mazed!!! Hands Down one of the top eateries anywhere!!
