When we want high-end sushi without the high-end scene, we head for the simple outdoor tables here and dig into house specialties. Signatures like yukke toro (fatty tuna tartare with quail egg and housemade soy sauce) and kani nigiri (seaweed-filled with baked spicy crab) aren't exclusive to this locale (Mirai shares its head chef with Japonais), but the funky neighborhood and surrounding postdinner bar choices are. A closer look at the menu reveals that diners pay an extra $2 to $5 per item at Japonais, so when here, use that extra dough to attack the specials sheet, which often offers supremely fresh flights of tuna and whitefish of varying fattiness.
