Hewar Music Group
Part of Old Town School of Folk Music's World Music Wednesdays
Hewar is an extraordinary musical experiment first unveiled in Damascus in 2003. Using an unusual instrumentation of oud, clarinet, cello, percussion and soprano vocals, Hewar allows for an open-ended dialogue between Arabic music, jazz and western classical melodies. The band features Issam Rafea (oud), Kinan Azmeh (Clarinet), Omar Musfi (percussion) Kinan Abou-Afach (Cello) and Dima Orsho (vocals). The band has toured Europe, Japan, Lebanon and Egypt and returns for their second U.S. tour.

Tim Fite with Benjy Ferree and eyesearsnose
Click on the TOC logo to enter to win tickets to see Tim Fite!
A year in the making, the sounds on Tim Fite's new album are as big and ambitious as the topics it contains. Drums tracked overnight at Fite's old high school drive many of the songs. On top of the propulsive beats, Fite sprinkles his signature samples but with a more restrained hand, and these bits of musical flotsam become more a part of the whole than a sum of disparate parts. "Big Mistake" is perhaps the most straightforwardly catchy song Fite has ever penned, in spite of a touch of his pervasive self-effacement, and on "Trouble," Fite growls about greed, a topic manifest in last year's Over The Counter Culture. The progressive sound of Tim Fite is not to be missed!

Click on the TOC logo to enter to win tickets to see Tricky!
Tricky's newest release, Knowle West Boy, is the album that sums up everything that Tricky has accomplished since his 1995 Maxinquaye debut. Knowle West Boy sees our misunderstood hero reaching into the post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip-hop and pure pop he grew up adoring, twisting it all into surreal Tricky shapes using his astonishingly accomplished band and a host of great undiscovered singers, and ending up with the most varied and accessible set of his career. From bar-room blues to dancehall, the influences of Tricky's musical achievements come full circle in Knowle West Boy. For the full experience, you won't want to miss this live show.
